The Hack for Your Favorite Fall Beverage

That's right...I hacked the Pumpkin Spice Latte!

I'm OBSESSED with this fall beverage that has garnered something of a cult following over the years. The first day the PSL is available I'm there. And it's officially the first day of Autumn in my book.

But there's a slight problem I always encounter - I'm a pretty healthy eater. In particular, I'm always trying to avoid consuming large amounts of processed sugar. And the PSL has a ton of it. If you're like me and you can't go through the fall season without enjoying this delicious pumpkin-y coffee drink (yes, I'm aware there is no real pumpkin in it), then you'll love this simple hack for a less sugary, lower calorie pumpkin spice latte-like drink you can order from your barista.

Order a caffè misto (or a café au lait/café con leche, depending on what area of the world you're in). The misto consists of half brewed coffee, half steamed milk, making it very similar to a latte. Enjoy it with nonfat milk and you'll cut your calories and sugar almost in half compared to a latte. To get the pumpkin spice latte flavor I asked the barista to add one pump of pumpkin spice syrup. If you want more of a pumpkin flavor you can ask for another pump, but I wouldn't go more than two. The regular pumpkin spice latte contains four pumps of pumpkin spice syrup! That's too much for me. Too sweet. And, at that point, you can't even taste the coffee. Might as well drink a cup of syrup. I love pumpkin, but I also love coffee.

Here is a comparison:

Tall (12 oz.) nonfat, no whip Pumpkin Spice Latte
Calories: 200
Sodium: 170mg
Sugar: 37g

Tall (12 oz.) Caffè Misto with 1 pump Pumpkin Spice syrup
Calories: 93
Sodium: 0mg
Sugar: 16g

If you want to add another pump of the syrup, here is a nutritional breakdown:
Calories: 33
Sodium: 0mg
Sugar: 8g

If you aren't a fan of the pumpkin spice latte, but prefer other flavorings, this could work with whichever syrup you prefer. A tall nonfat misto without syrup has 60 calories, and 8 grams of sugar. So do the math with whatever syrup you choose to figure out what you're consuming.

Now I can have my PSL guilt-free (still in moderation)! :)
